Feed-in tariff: New renewable energy policy to be unveiled

KARACHI:

The government is likely to unveil a new renewable Feed-In Tariff (FIT) policy next month as it looks to narrow the economically crippling energy gap. FIT was first launched in year 2006, but the package bore little fruit as the country has just 6MW of operational wind capacity.

A feed-in tariff is a policy mechanism designed to accelerate investment in renewable energy technologies. Pakistan’s wind portfolio consists of three to four gigawatt while neighbouring India has more than 13GW, according to global wind energy council.
