ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to take parliament into confidence before launching any military operation or initiating dialogue with militants.

“The government must immediately brief the National Assembly on its counter terrorism policy and the position on dialogue and/or the possibility of an impending military operation,” The PTI’s Core Committee (CC) said in an official statement.

“It must also hold an in-camera briefing for all the political leaders about the current security situation, including on the talks and timelines of any planned military operations,” said the committee as it expressed concern over military actions, based on Pakistan’s tragic past record of such actions.

The committee also demanded to know the parameters of such a military operation, adding that disturbing reports were coming in from North Waziristan Agency, where aerial bombardment had left the local people shelterless and resulted in many casualties including that of children.

“At the very least, the government should have evacuated the area of civilians before allowing any military operation or aerial bombardment,” the statement said.

The committee said the government’s continuing vacillation on giving a clear-cut counter-terror policy was destroying any hope for peace through dialogue.

“Almost 9 months on, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government has yet to put in place a cohesive counter terrorism policy and state clearly whether the all parties conference (APC) mandate for dialogue was ever operationalised or whether it has never been attempted,” the committee said.

It said the PTI felt the US had successfully sabotaged the peace process with its droning of the peace talks when they were about to commence.

It said the PTI’s principled position on dialogue was premised on the strong logic that one must divide the adversary so that those who were prepared to hold dialogue should be separated from the hardcore groups.

“A military operation is always a last resort option and must always have political ownership and guidance so as to give the military national support. We cannot allow our military, whose soldiers have always laid down their lives for Pakistan, to be left isolated without political ownership,” the committee said, adding that PTI had always recognised the tremendous sacrifices of Pakistani soldiers.

The core committee also expressed grave concern over Maulana Samiul Haq’s statement that the government was not serious about dialogue. “What is even more disturbing is his claim that the PM asked him to plead with the Taliban to ‘spare us (Punjab)’,” it added.

  1. Dear Mr. IK,

How about you apply the same amount of pressure on your own provincial gov’t. to get better results rather than uselessly criticizing federal gov’t. Thanks

    A Concerned Citizen.

  2. @ concerned citizen

Can you please elaborate what kinda better results you seek? PTI govt is performing well in KPK and is far ahead of any other provincial government in Pakistan.

  3. Vick what miracle pti is showing in PK .please tell public which is not visible to public in large

  4. @Concerned Citizen:
The matter here he discusses is not related to provincial government performance. It’s national issue he is talking about and should be discussed in Parliament.
By the way, I am from KPK and people are happy with the incumbent government.

  5. @vick:
    Whaaaaat?
” Government in KPK is far ahead than others”
Please somebody stop this world, i want to get down.

  6. KPK is doing very well. The Chairman has to instruct the CM PK for a condolence visit to Shaheed Aaizaz Hassan in front of the whole media. Chain of Command I suppose

Some stupid report said Peshawer is the Polio Hub of the world or some thing like that

  7. @SUB

It looks like you meant polio came to KPK when PTI took over..Did you mean that? It means Pehsawer has most cases of polio in world just in last 8 months….That can not happen. Please don’t resort on stupidities.
Can you tell us who has worked on polio more than IK? any politician?
Compare KPK with others in terms of VIP culture, corruption, patwari system and overall system…I heard elections are gonna be held using biometric system…an achievement indeed but only for those who believe in fairness and want to see transparency in Pakistan….All good things might not benefit you but they do benefit majority eventuall.

  8. Using IK advice your suppose to notify the militant compound and inform them that your going to bomb them that night and to evacuate any innocent civilians that maybe inside or nearby the compound? Yeah – that will work.

  9. Imran Khan is doing Point scoring. He always creates hurdles in the federal government matters. PTI has failed in KPK and now they are doing point scoring only for their politics.

  10. @SUB:
Yes it became polio hub in the last 6 months. Right? Get a life seriously. You are blinded and you ll bash IK no matter what

  11. The so called operation is in progress and with the approval of Nawaz Sharif Government; Pakistan military is bombing the villages indiscriminately and are not prepared to loosen up their hold in KPK and Baluchistan! Imran Khan rhetoric is nothing more than a distraction!
