The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday announced that Pakistan’s banned cricketers, left-hand batsman Salman Butt and right-arm fast-bowler Muhammad Asif, will be allowed to participate in competitive matches after September 1.

Furthermore, the ban on left-arm pacer Muhammad Amir will also expire on the same date following permission being granted to him to play at domestic level earlier this year.

“As with all players and other participants in cricket, all three players remain bound to comply with the ICC Anti-Corruption Code and the anti-corruption rules of all National Cricket Federations,” the media release stated.

“Consequently, if they should commit any further act of corrupt conduct they are liable to (i) further separate disciplinary proceedings for breaches of the relevant Code or rules and (ii) in the case of Asif and Butt and where such breach occurs during the suspended part of their original period of ineligibility, the activation of that suspended period of ineligibility.”

The three players were involved in spot-fixing incidents in the August 2010 Test against England when Salman was leading the team.

A British newspaper News of the World broke the story and the aforementioned players were later found to take bribes from a bookmaker, Mazhar Majeed, to bowl no-balls.

The British police arrested the bookmaker and the ICC banned the three players for different periods; Amir for five years, Asif for seven years (later two years were suspended on specific conditions) and Salman for 10 years (later five years were suspended on specific conditions).

  1. Kick the drug addicted lose character players out of Pakistani team. No more space of shameless creatures.

  2. too late for them. their better days are already over. But they might be able to make some money for their retiring period. Wonder what will that cost pakistan this time? I hope PCB keep them away from the national side.

  3. Now what? Assume for a moment Asif and Amir show his old form in domestic cricket. 5 years they were probably the finest opening attack.

  4. Asif is a lost case. He can never learn. Also his golden days are over as a bowler.

Butt will create grouping in team. Senior players like Malik, Azhar, Younis will not accept him.

Aamir – we have found many like him and many are developing. Junaid, Zia ul Haq, Mir Hamza to name a few.

  5. @khalid:
suffered a lot?? They took money to throw away the game. The captain tricked Amir also in to it. Why should they play again? Except for Amir, the other two belong in prison.

  6. Only two things can be done. Either let all 3 play for Pakistan [whenever is the right time] or don’t allow anyone of the 3 to play for the Country. Its unfair to let Aamir play and keep the other two off the field! All three were equally responsible to what happened in England including Aamir.

Junaid, Hamza are all good but Aamir is still the best fast bowling find in the last few years for our cricket.
